School Days

On Friday of the weekend is School Day. Fourth graders from area schools "Go Back to the Days" of colonial life and times. Educational curriculm on Indiana history is provided through "hands on" demonstration including candle dipping, bow napping (making bows by hand), flint napping, spinning, hide preserving, leather working, visiting the village blacksmith, working in the garden and many other colonial crafts. It's 'girls on the one side' and 'boys on the other' when they attend blab school. Students enjoy participating in military drills with wooden muskets, and attending a "Punch and Judy" puppet show. There are sewing lessons with students making a quilt square to take home. And...everyone's favorite is the cannon demonstration.
Lunch is provided. Everyone is invited to enjoy soup prepared in iron kettles on an open fire, as well as other period foods.
Each year, an essay contest is held prior to the event. Students write in first person narrative on a subject chosen. Winners receive a pizza party donated by Pizza Hut.
School Day is made possible through the support of many local merchants and organizations. Those include Montieth Tire, Teachers Credit Union, Kosciusko Community Foundation, Dekko Foundation, and several individuals. Student teachers from Grace College, as well as volunteers from the community, help make this day a success.
Sorry, Friday is a kids-only day!
Young and Old Alike are invited to join in on the many craft activities at the Kid's Corner on Saturday and Sunday during...Back to the Days of Kosciuszko.
